General dentistry / periodic check-up

Dental Practice Johan Huizingalaan

General dentistry includes periodic check-ups. This check-up is very important for the preservation of your teeth. During a periodic check-up, your mouth is thoroughly examined, where the dentist looks for any problems such as cavities, tooth decay, gum problems and incorrect position of the teeth. By regularly scheduling periodic checks, any problems can be detected and treated in time before they develop into larger problems. Our dentists also provide advice about your daily oral hygiene, such as brushing and flossing your teeth. By having regular periodic check-ups, you can keep your teeth healthy in the long term.

About the periodic checkup

On average, our clients have twice-yearly checkups at our dental practice in Amsterdam. We recommend a check-up every six months so that our dentists and dental hygienists can detect and prevent emerging dental problems at an early stage.

A periodic check-up takes around ten minutes. If you opt for a combination appointment, where a periodic check-up is combined with an extensive dental cleaning, this will take about 40 minutes. By combining your periodic check-up with a dental cleaning, you only have to visit our practice once. Very handy, right?

Check-up by a Dentist

If you choose a combination appointment, you will be seen by your dentist and one of our dental hygienists or prevention assistants during your appointment.

Your regular dentist will carefully examine your gums and teeth to detect and resolve any dental problems, such as cavities. If the dentist discovers a problem, it will be addressed during a follow-up appointment. If the dentist discovers a problem, it will be addressed during a follow-up appointment. A lot of our dental treatments such as cavities, root canal treatment or the placement of veneers can simply be carried out by your own dentist. Every two years new x-rays will be taken of your teeth because certain problems are not visible to the naked eye.

Treatment by a dental hygienist

During your combination appointment, one of our dental hygienists or prevention assistants will thoroughly clean your teeth. The dental hygienist will also give you more information about how to prevent dental problems.

Tips to keep your teeth healthy

As mentioned earlier, we attach great importance to prevention in our practice. Our professional team of dentists, hygienists and prevention assistants are happy to assist you with tips to keep your teeth and gums healthy:

  • We recommend that you come at least twice a year for a periodic check-up and dental cleaning. Detecting any problems early will prevent more serious dental problems.
  • To prevent tartar, plaque and cavities, brushing your teeth twice a day is important.
  • Use brushes and dental floss to further clean your teeth.

Costs of periodic check-ups

The cost of root canal treatment can vary depending on the severity of the condition and the number of root canals being treated. For example, a front tooth has only two canals, while a molar has four canals. On average, the costs of a root canal treatment vary between €300 and €700.

Fortunately, your health insurance can help cover some of these costs. However, the amount of reimbursement you receive for a root canal treatment depends on your health insurance. Some health insurance policies offer no or limited reimbursement for root canal treatments, while others offer greater reimbursement. Prior to the treatment, we will draw up a budget so that you can check with your health insurance where you stand.

Reimbursement of periodic check-ups by the health insurer

Until the age of 18, periodic checkups are reimbursed by your health insurer’s basic health insurance. However, some insurers apply a price ceiling, so check this carefully with your own health insurer. Furthermore, from the age of 18, you must have additional insurance for reimbursement. The amount of this reimbursement depends on your health insurer.

Frequently asked questions about periodic check-ups

How often must I come along for a periodic check-up?

In general, we recommend that our clients come in twice a year for a periodic check-up. However, depending on your individual situation and dental history, your dentist may advise you to visit more or less often.

Is it mandatory to regularly visit your dental practice in Amsterdam Nieuw-West for a periodic check-up?

No, it is not mandatory to visit the dentist regularly for a periodic check-up. Although it is not mandatory, we strongly recommend that you come by regularly for a check-up. Periodic checkups can help detect dental problems early and treat them before they get worse. Since dental problems can often be painful and expensive to treat, having regular checkups can also help you save money on dental care.

Why are x-rays sometimes taken during a periodic check-up?

X-rays will be taken once every two years during a periodic check-up. We do this because it is not always possible to see certain dental problems with the naked eye. X-rays provide a view of the inside of the teeth, allowing the dentist to detect problems that would otherwise not be visible. Problems that can be detected by an X-ray include cavities, inflammation of the root of a tooth or cysts.

Why does a periodic check-up take 40 minutes at your dental practice?

We like a personal approach and like to take the time to check and clean your teeth. We attach great importance to prevention and during your periodic check-up, we will give you advice on how to keep your teeth beautiful.

Is there anything I should take into account after a periodic check-up?

You will often not have any problems after a check-up, although your teeth may be a bit more sensitive than normal after a thorough cleaning. If we have treated your teeth with fluoride, you should not eat or drink anything for an hour after the treatment.
